Combining the Power of Edge Computing with Monkton's Cloud Native Solutions

Find Out Why the Future is Here at the Edge and Get Ready to Compute from Anywhere

Stated simply, “Edge Computing” means having servers close to end users (at the “Edge”) that enable rapid communications, which facilitates faster, more reliable real-time data. In layman's terms, Edge Computing means being able to compute wherever you are.

Edge Computing enables data to be processed and analyzed in real-time at the Edge of the network, rather than being sent to a central location such as a data center or the Cloud. How? By using a distributed computing paradigm that brings computing power and data storage closer to the devices and sensors that generate and use data. This reduces latency and improves the performance of applications that require low latency and high bandwidth, such as IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, and augmented reality.

Living on the Edge… of Servers

Typically involving a network of Edge devices, Edge Computing can be used by devices ranging from smartphones and tablets to routers and IoT gateways that collect and process data locally. These devices can also communicate with other Edge devices or with a centralized cloud or data center. One massive benefit of Edge Computing is that it’s industry agnostic and can be utilized for a myriad of disciplines such as healthcare, transportation, manufacturing, and telecommunications, enabling faster, more efficient, and more secure data processing and analysis

Cloud Based Edge Capable, Monkton’s Future-Proof Framework

Another significant advantage of Edge Computing is the ability to perform work in austere environments and if communications are denied by adversaries. Edge Computing equips organizations with solutions that can run in degraded environments, letting them maintain operational availability. Monkton understands that not every customer solution may focus on Edge Computing, but instead leads with agile Cloud Based Edge Capable (CBEC) architecture and design methodologies. This fundamental architectural consideration enables our customers with Edge capabilities at the onset of every project and is fundamental to the delivery of solutions.

Below, we’ve listed a few key considerations with Edge Computing:

1. Security & Privacy

Bringing the Cloud to your users is a cornerstone of mobility and Edge Computing. Monkton’s Mobile Apps to The Tactical Edge Ready (“MATTER”) IDIQ empowers organizations to securely and rapidly deploy Edge based Cloud services. With Cloud Computing, data travels between endpoints through service providers without direct active management by the end user. Processing data at the Edge means increased privacy by limiting the transference of sensitive information to the Cloud. Additionally, Edge Computing shifts the paradigm of data ownership from service providers to end-users, further adding an extra layer of security.

How Monkton Does It…

“Secure By Design” isn’t just a talking point, it is the cornerstone of Monkton’s story. Along with starting off every project with intentional CBEC architecture and design methodologies, we look at compliance requirements and how to deliver successes for users from the start.

Monkton’s vision is that security, compliance, and privacy can be accessible for all by creating repeatable solutions for unique mission needs. Compliance and security are baked in from day one by leveraging standards like NIST, NIAP, FedRAMP, HIPAA, using our Zero Trust-based patent, and extensive partnerships with trusted experts from Amazon Web Services, Samsung, Google, and more. Monkton’s team has extensive experience in Cloud development, from developing with Cloud Native services to integrating with legacy systems—all with security in mind.

By combining Function as a service (“FaaS) and Platform as a service (“PaaS”) to immediately solve business problems today, organizations can architect mission capabilities that can run anywhere—even on disconnected Edge missions. This proper architecture and design, developed over years of work and research, ensures that Cloud hosted solutions run in multiple regions, but enable CBEC solutions to live and thrive on the Edge.

2. Data Integrity

Once upon a time, on-site software created limitations like fixed-location servers and centralized computing. But then, mobile devices came along, allowing for anything and everything to be accessed without the same fixed-location hurdles. Mobile devices were intended to solve problems, but what happens when we cannot access or store data on our intended problem-solving devices?

Over the course of 15-20 years, there’s been a massive shift from centralized computing to Cloud Computing. However, with the Cloud becoming like a handbag exceptionally heavy with accessories, issues occur. Excess baggage causes problems like network latency, server outages, device malfunctions, and a myriad of failures. Data can get disconnected and siloed, further strengthening the notion that decentralized Edge Computing has its perks.

When you can control and harness data across the Edge to the Cloud, It turns out so much becomes possible, allowing for successful computation at the Edge. Edge Computing enables real-time insights without the headaches of latency, allowing for strategic decisions to be made, rapidly. A connected Edge provides the flexibility to go from Edge to Cloud with ease, so business priorities can be balanced. Data is easily unified and can scale when and where you need, seamlessly integrating apps and infrastructure.

3. Speed & Reliability

In our everyday life, consumers utilize Edge-based capabilities like adaptive cruise control and pre-collision braking within automobiles; smart speakers like Alexa or Google Home; wearable healthcare devices that monitor chronic conditions for patients; security surveillance systems that operate in real time. Edge-based computing is everywhere in our daily life, but none of these examples address any critical or direct events that require immediate action.

When it comes to pressing events that are time-sensitive, Edge Computing has an advantage over the Cloud. Take, for example, a wearable healthcare monitoring device–if the device does not react in real-time to notify a patient if a stroke is about to occur, what good does it do? The reaction to external factors must be processed instantly – there is no time to send a signal to the Cloud and then wait for the Cloud to respond. The integrity and speed of data processed at the Edge enables real-time, and in some cases, life saving decision making capabilities.

How Monkton Does It…

Moving faster requires doing less. To go from concept to production, Monkton leverages Cloud Native capabilities to deliver solutions at the speed of relevance to missions. Though we are living in the development era of “speed at all costs,” that doesn’t mean “security at all costs.” We care about the security implications of every piece of code delivered.
